Charisse Lillie

Charisse Ranielle Lillie is an attorney, business leader, and CEO of CRL Consulting LLC, with a career spanning law, corporate leadership, human resources, philanthropy, and governance. She previously served as a partner and Chair of the Litigation Department at Ballard Spahr LLP, Philadelphia City Solicitor, a Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, and an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Lillie later held several senior leadership roles at Comcast Corporation, including Senior Vice President of Human Resources, President of the Comcast Foundation, and Vice President of Community Investment. She has served on major corporate and civic boards, including as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and has held board positions with Penn Mutual, PECO, and Independence Health Group. She earned her B.A., cum laude, from Wesleyan University, her J.D. from Temple University Beasley School of Law, and her LL.M. from Yale Law School.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

  • Discover why strong legal judgment takes years of experience, observation, and guidance that law school alone cannot provide.
  • Learn how Charisse Lillie’s early exposure to the civil rights movement shaped her decision to pursue a career in law.
  • Uncover the important difference between a mentor who gives advice and a sponsor who advocates for you behind closed doors.
  • Find out why young lawyers still need experienced human mentors as artificial intelligence becomes more common in legal practice.
  • Explore how working in government, Big Law, corporate America, and board leadership gave Charisse different perspectives on professional growth.
  • Get practical insight into how young professionals can make themselves valuable to mentors instead of treating mentorship as a one way relationship.
  • Understand why career opportunities often depend on people who are willing to put their reputation and influence behind your work.
  • Hear how former mentees later helped Charisse build her own book of business when she became a partner at a major law firm.
  • Learn why senior leaders have a responsibility to identify promising talent and help develop the next generation of professionals.

In this episode…

What separates a capable law school graduate from a lawyer who can exercise sound judgment when the stakes are high? Legal education provides essential knowledge, but Charisse Lillie explains why experience, mentorship, sponsorship, and exposure to seasoned professionals often determine how effectively a young lawyer develops after graduation. So what should ambitious lawyers be learning that rarely appears in a classroom?

Charisse breaks down the difference between mentorship and sponsorship, explains why AI cannot replace the human experience required to develop professional judgment, and shares how relationships shaped her own career. She also recounts entering a major law firm as a partner without an established book of business and how former mentees eventually became an unexpected source of client referrals that helped her build her practice.
